ANDY ROONEY’S RETIREMENT – MAYBE A JOB OPENING FOR ME!

As I was watching 60 Minutes tonight, just catching the last half hour of it, Maury Safer said that 92 year old Andy Rooney’s segment was the last one tonight.  They devoted a whole half hour to this funny looking writer who wrote about anything that he thought about, which was things that you or I also thought about but didn’t give it a second thought or just dismissed it from our being.  But not Andy.  He delved into the most miniscule things we took for granted or would have never even thought about.

He did a lot of complaining.  In fact, that’s what most of his segments were about, i.e., laundry soap, junk in his car, junk in his desk, etc., etc., etc.

That’s where I come in.  Isn’t that what my blog is all about?  Complaining a good part of the time.  Expressing “my every day experiences and how I see them?”

I’m really stoked on writing to CBS and pitching them my resume; blogging for four years on blogger.com, a few creative writing classes in college.  Do you think they’d really consider me?  After all, Andy had said he was raised in a rich family, going to the best of schools, writing for the Army newspaper in World War II.  After the war, he started writing for Arthur Godfrey and other notables on TV at that time and then he got into the news area of TV.  What a life he had and he said he’d do it all again.

But then again, who’s to say what CBS would think about me; a senior female with the same kind of thoughts as Andy, albeit, his being much more thought out than mine.

Andy did say he had a grammar school teacher that told him he should become a writer some day and so he took those words and did what she said.  How influential that teacher was and if she ever knew that.

I had a college professor, who at the end of the semester, gave his critiques to each student.  At least I thought he gave critiques to each one, but who knows.  I still have his letter to me saying as closely as I can remember, “Yes, you are a good writer and should look into being a writer and submit my writing,” and I had what it took.  I’d scan it and show you, but it’s down at my ranch in Southern CA in a box.  I never threw that letter away.  It gave me confidence and happiness when I read it.  Maybe I’ll even frame it one of these days.

Anyways, I wouldn’t even know who to send my resume to at CBS.  Maybe a video resume would be better.  I, of course, wouldn’t send it to the regular employment division of CBS, but to the president and vice president.  Who knows who would get a hold of my pidley offering to such a great name in TV along the way down to the trash basket in an office of CBS.

Are you laughing yet, like I am, writing this piece?  Maybe someday I’ll be laughing all the way to the imaginary bank if I got this imaginary job.  LOL, LOL, LOL.

I think you would make a fine replacement for Andy Rooney.

One of his most memorable commentaries for me was the one where he complains about keeping stuff we think we may need in the future (nuts, bolts, odds and ends, etc). Then, when the need arises, we can't remember where we put it and go buy another one.

Happens all the time.
