GETTING BACK INTO THE SWING OF THINGS (PUN INTENDED)

Yesterday I went to meet the ladies for tennis. What a great group and I know I’ll go back for more. No one was that competitive and it was all just for fun. What a change from the people I played with when I was younger. I realized I haven’t lifted my tennis racket in 20 years and just starting out cold was scary. I made sure all of the ladies knew I hadn’t played in 20 years and they all told me not to even think about it. Unbelievably, I thought everybody was as good as I was, with maybe an exception of two ladies.

Next week they will play tennis 8:00 to 10:00 as usual, but then go to the park for lunch. I’ll be sure to wear my new tennis outfit I bought. An older lady there asked for my phone number so we could get together before that. Round Robins were mentioned and I’ve forgotten what that entailed, but I’m sure they’ll tell me.

As I walked on to the tennis courts, they sure seemed a lot larger than they were before. I don’t know why, but they just did. How intimidated they made me feel. I was scared, especially when it was my turn to serve. Amazingly, I fell back into the rhythm of things, remembering to step into the ball, keep my racket face open, etc., etc. A lady even told me I was over the base line. It’s just little things like that that have to come back to me little by little and I’ll be on my way.

There are also tennis clinics they have where they’ll hire a pro and for about $3.00 he’ll tell you what you’re doing wrong. Maybe after all these years I really need something like that. Practice, practice, practice.

Unfortunately, the tennis courts we play at are locked and so are other courts in this area. You need to buy a key to get in. Luckily, the leader of the group has a key. The courts are in really good condition. It started heating up a lot by 10:00 which was when we left anyways. So, perfect timing. I love to do things here mostly any time you like, not like that hot, hot desert. It still got hot here, but still 20 degrees less than Joshua Tree.

While I was purchasing my GPS Tuesday, I also went shopping for some new tennis clothes even though I didn’t wear them. I purchased a coral colored skirt, which had white shorts attached underneath, and a white matching top with coral cording around the neckline, armholes and front. The matching outfit is so pretty. Most of the ladies just wore shorts and a top. Some wore skirts and tops. I just expected to go to the courts, which I found with my handy dandy GPS (Gee, P.S., I love you) and observe, and maybe if they had a backboard, I’d practice, and get back into it on my own. However, the girls saw me with a tennis racket and invited me in with them immediately.

I wore my at least 20-year-old tennis shoes, still in good condition, but after playing in them for over two hours, I realized they were now a bit too small. So this week before next Wednesday or before I play tennis with my new tennis friend, I’m going to search for a new pair of tennis shoes and maybe some tennis shorts and top or another matching outfit with shorts. I will also look for a new tennis bag where I’d be able to put my tennis racket in along with my water and a small purse.

How much fun I’m having getting back into the swing of things. Pun intended.
