GEO CACHING

While I was at the Senior Center the other day, I picked up a flier for June activities for seniors. One of the events I found was a free class in Geo caching. They supply the GPS systems, also for free, for the participants to use.

For those of you who don’t know that much or nothing at all about the activity, the gist of it is that you go out with a hand held GPS system, follow hints and directions on the Internet and try to get to a designated end to a trail where you find a treasure box. There are items inside this box where you can take one and replace the item with one of your items. These things can be anything with little to no value such as a small children's plastic toy, plastic jewelry, or a handwritten note. You then go back to the Internet and declared you found the box.

I had a GPS system, but the screen was too small and the map not too detailed. I learned a lot about Geo caching on my own through the Geo caching website. There are events all over the world with people trying to find these treasures with their GPS.

My skills with the GPS I had were very limited, so it was hard for me to gather all of the directions, get to the designated end of the search, find the cache and find my way back to civilization. I always was leery that I’d be out there, wandering around with my GPS in hand going in circles and getting lost.

When I called the Senior Center to find out if they'll be having any more or these classes, I got a message. I left a message and hopefully they'll call me back with good news that they'll be having another class and I could sign up for it.

Hi Buffy,

My husband and I have been enjoying reading your posts. Thanks for the advice on watching where I want to go and not where I don't want to go when riding a bike. lol! Glad to see you've tried some geocaching. It's amazing to look at the map on the geocaching website and see how many caches are in the vicinity of one's home. We plan on checking our lock box this weekend. Haven't had any logs on it lately. Thanks for stopping by RMKK. We enjoy hearing from you.

Happy Adventures!
