This morning was my second meeting with the new tennis club I’m joining. I wore one of my new tennis outfits; the coral skirt and white top with coral cording. The really thick and cushy socks I purchased along with my new tennies were also worn. I arrived early because I wanted to check out the high school’s facilities. They have a pool, basketball court, soccer court and a track with the new type of running track. It looks like Berber rug. The colors of the track are very attractive with shades of grey and blues for the letters, numbers and lanes. The swimming pool isn’t as large or new as the one Doris and I plan on attending water aerobics, but very attractive still. There is also exercise equipment around the various facilities so you can get a full body workout along with cardio.
Today was Round Robin day at the club. This is playing the game to the rules and switching partners. The person who wins the most games wins a can of tennis balls. Happily, I didn’t come in last. I believe I was fourth from the bottom, so I was happy about that.
It certainly is challenging to again try to play the game remembering forehand, backhand, overhead serve and rules of the game and remembering who served, keeping track of the scores and body placement on the court. It was fun and hope it will come easier the more I play. Nobody really cares if you mess up, miss a ball, or don’t serve well. I try my hardest and make sure they all know it’s been 20+ years since I picked up a tennis racquet.
After tennis, we then ventured down to another park nearby where a committee meeting was to be held. I brought a lunch of a mango smoothie and potato chips. They talked about the different things they did in the club and I was surprised at how much they had to offer. Besides tennis, there is a book club, a sewing clutch, birthday parties at a restaurant every month with a cake (we buy our own lunch) and the tennis clinics, also once a month.
Of course, Genie accompanied me to both parks. The second park we ventured to I had never been to, Genie brought me to the park through beautiful streets and again another beautiful park that had tennis courts, picnic tables, and I believe a baseball and basketball courts.
I turned in an application form for joining the club and next week I’ll pay my dues and be a real tennis club member.
The ladies there are very sociable, even to me, the newbie.
I got introduced and they wanted to know a little bit about me. Their ages range from the 30s into the 70s. There are about 70 members; however, so far, there are only about 12 people who show up to play. We’ve only taken up two to three courts each week. We talked about various subjects; political, religious, health and fashion, to mention a few. I’m happy to see some younger faces in the club. There are two players that are supposed to be the better players, but frankly, I don’t see it. Their serves are a little better than most, but as far as getting the ball in the court and actually hitting the ball, that needs to be seen by me, because I just don’t see it.
After tennis, I came home with the help of Genie and got on the computer. I’m busy editing my photos of this past weekend’s Fourth of July parade.
I’m going to start looking for something to do for this weekend, since the weather is so beautiful.
