Where have all of my American Goldfinch gone? I know they were here last year at this time, but no more. Not one.
Maybe the Jays have scared them off. Something pretty traumatic has happened on my patio feeding area.
Yesterday, I did notice a Jay attack a Titmouse feeding. I wondered if the Titmouse made a successful escape. It all happened so fast. The Titmouse came back feeding later with a wounded leg and wing, but was managing to fly and walk. I haven't seen him today yet. I hope he's recuperated.
The Jays have learned to adapt to the hanging feeder and maybe that's why the Goldfinch have gone.
The only ones feeding here now are the Titmice, what looks like Cowbirds (I still haven't figured out what they are) and the Jays. The Juncos have gone for the summer, which is not unusual.
I don’t usually feed the birds when the weather heats up, but this year, maybe for a bit longer I’ll do it. Maybe because I like the company and the birds are entertaining.
Since it’s Spring, I’ve noticed the Titmice have been a bit friskier. They're playing, feeding each other and fluttering their wings.
Spring has finally sprung, a little late, I must say. The Robbins are surely around. I even saw an Oriole, who tried landing on my Hummingbird feeder.
Maybe I'll start putting fliers on trees. It would say, "MISSING GOLDFINCH...BRIGHTLY COLORED GREEN AND YELLOW BIRDS...REWARD!" Maybe not.
